| Objective: to have the best five card hand using any combination of your own two cards and the five community cards.
Basic Play: In hold'em, the dealer is determined by the dealer button, which rotates clockwise around the table. To the dealer's immediate left is the small blind who posts half a regular bet. To the small blind's left is the big blind who posts a full bet. Each player is dealt two cards face down called hole cards. A round of betting ensues beginning with the person to the left of the big blind, going clockwise. Once betting is over, three community cards, called the flop, are turned over. Another round of betting ensues, this time, and for each subsequent round of betting, with the betting starting in the small blind position. After betting is over any remaining players get to see a fourth card turned over called the turn. Once again a round of betting ensues, again starting with the closest to the small blind. Following this, if players remain, one final card is turned over called the river. One final round of betting ensues. If any players remain after the final round of betting, cards are revealed starting clockwise from the small blind or closest remaining player to it. This is called the showdown and the best five card hand, using any combination of cards from the two hole cards and five community cards, wins. |
